BP Oil Spill

Cost & Effects of the BP Oil Spill

Since the April 20 Explosion, 210,000 gallons of oil (795,000 liters) have been gushing out into the ocean every day. On April 20, one million gallons had leaked into the ocean. By April 27, the total oil spilled was two million gallons. By May 4, the total leaked oil was three million gallons. For comparison, the Exxon Valdez spilled 11 million gallons of oil into Prince William Sound in 1989.

The Cost of the BP Oil Spill

A barrel of oil costs $86 currently. Before the spill, oil cost $83 per barrel. The BP oil rig is leaking 5,000 barrels a day. That’s $430,000 a day that is floating away in the ocean (and killing birds in the meantime). Eleven people are already presumed dead.

There are 42 gallons of oil in a barrel. Of those gallons, 23 gallons become gasoline. The rest of the oil becomes jet fuel, lubricant, diesel and so on. The United States uses 20 million barrels of oil a day.

More Costs to BP From the Oil Spill

Since the spill, BP’s stock has lost a market value of $25 billion. To put $25 billion into perspective- it takes $15 billion to provide clean water to half a billion people in the world who need it. Google makes $20 billion per year. The $25 billion that the spill has cost BP has made the world’s water dirtier.

It’s estimated that it will cost $300 million to plug the spill. That amount does not include cleanup. That would buy enough gasoline to drive a gas-guzzling SUV around the circumference of the Earth 60,237 times.

Who cars about the economic losses!? As humans we have become so detached from mother nature its crazy! This is the only planet we have, and if we dont start taking care of it, we will regret it.

Just read that the actual price of oil is aroud $76.00 do you just make these numbers up and hope we take it as gospel? I wonder what else you got wrong.
  • If your business, or any other businesses you know of, are being affected by the BP Oil spill, please check out our website at www.bpoilrelief.com. It's a free tracking system that will allow business owners to keep records of what they lose each day as a result of the spill. This is an efficient way to keep everything documented and organized for their records with little effort on their part.

The amount of petroleum products ending up in the ocean is estimated at 0.25% of world oil production: about 6 million tons per year.
  • Note to BP: It's hopeless, Mr. Hayward. Fire your Operations SVP and SVP for Public Relations. Next, start your negotiations for that merger with Royal Dutch Shell. http://billslater.com/bp

Wow this needs to be stopped but I don't want to pay more taxes!!!!!!!!!
(Sigh) I feel so bad for all those poor animals who can't do anything about it ,but try to escape and It will just spread around the entire globe if we don't do anything about it and you know what that means!!. No clean water ever again!!!!! I hope it stops soon!!!

The oil spill is just another thing on the long list that the working class Americans are going to have to pay for in the end, this is a problem that needs to be fixed and payed for by BP and BP only but we all know it won't be.
  • Huh. So it's really not that bad. Nice job, press. I almost thought it was 12/22/2012.
  • AnonCowturd
    It's "litre" not "liter".
And perhaps the USA will now demand the secondary safety system that are imposed by other major nations around the world.
  • S. Blow
It is Liter, depending on where you are from. Just like it can either be Color or Colour. There are minute differences in regional language
  • Holy smokes, these numbers are astounding... and scary!

It's going to take freaking years to even begin repairing the damage done. This is B.S!
  • Events like this is probably the biggest justification for alternative energy. Seriously, people from all ends of the political and conservation spectrum know that tragedies like this is simply wrong. Sure a major oil spill/leak (whatever you want to call it) rarely happens, but when it does, the whole ecosystem becomes severely damaged. How can we continue to chance it?

I mean really now, its cringing to know about half the American population believe we should just continue our sole reliance on oil.

    math fail

only 210,000 thousand gallons a day? that sounds very low for a blowout of their HUGE drilling operation. I bet it's 1000 X worse then the oil company claims. They don't have a history of truth or cleanup.
  • math
    5000 x 86 = what now?
  • RutledgeWB
If our petroleum markets were nationalized then the same thing would have probably happened. As easy as it is to hate BP this is an accident. we should be more focused on ways to help the gulf's industry right now and how to fix this than playing the blame game.

OH wow, now that is some pretty cool stuff dude.
