Uh Zafar, India is where it is on every map of the world.

Most of the world denigrates the U.S. at every turn, but they count on the U.S. to be the policemen for the world and to protect them. Our national interests require us to do so, despite the temptation to let them see what it's like to get what they deserve.

Darling,
The US spends way more than the "official" figures on military. Most of it is disguised in other programs and through private spending. It's more like 10-15% of GDP.
In fact much of US GDP itself comes from selling weapons that kill hundreds of thousands each year.
The evil empire indeed.
Robert451
US spending includes defense of Japan, Korea, Europe, Ireland, Mexico, and on and on and on. Those countries don't have to spend on militaries they don't need.

Tajikistan spends more than Georgia, i didn't know that
Adam L.
I thought North Korea would be much higher, interesting.
Brandon
Lets try directing that money towards education or, even Healthcare.

Only two of the "countries" in the pie-chart are countries. Also - there is no Canada or South Africa?
Claude
i think there should be a "no data available" class as N. Korea shows as not spending any money on arms. It is also unclear how much China spends on arms, they are not necessarily publishing accurate figures.
Ryan Smith
Spending 48% of the world's total military budget is certainly a lot, I'll give you that. But as a percentage of GDP, the US isn't spending too much more than most other countries. I actually expected America's GDP percentage to be higher.
Lisa Noon
That's because the US also has a huge GDP. It absolute terms, US spending is off the charts!

Europe isn't a country. Projection isn't stated, looks like a Robinson or some other pseudo-cylindrical though. The pie chart should use the same (or at least similar) colour scheme as the choropleth. The interval ranges for your colour choices in the legend are not equal. Is this on purpose? Greenland is part of Denmark and so should be coloured the same way as it, or at least coloured since it creates a really bad figure ground. Hawaii is missing.
This map needs some work.

Surprise, surprise...the US accounts for basically half the world's military spending.
Mark Gudbrandsen
If you include homeland security and off the book war costs the U.S. total is over 1.5 trillon per year.
96 % of the whole world expeditures.
Universal health care 100 billion.
Small potatoes..
Robert Arvanitis
Critical issue is that the US spends huge amounts on people, especially post-service. Our 711 b. is not comparable to the Chinese 122 b. They of course have far lower "labor costs..."

What is the point of this? Measuring against GDP is a moot statistic!

might as well add saudi arabia's and egypt's to America's as that's where most of our foreign aid to those countries goe.s

Divert military spending into the Mprize ( www.mprize.org ), Aubre de greys founded the 10 year project to reverse aging in mice, then humans. Makes more sense than spending over 3 billion per day on the war machine, and it would only cost just 2 bilion over 10 years, of course, spending a bit more could speed up the project. The added benefit would be a practical use for the upcoming nanotech/biotech instead of applying the same developing nano/bio to new warfare uses, so what's it to be? People have been looking for a cure for aging since the begining of civilization, so why not apply it now, and if you really are a war-mongering type, just divert less than .03% of the insane war budget to actually making our cells younger, seems to make the most sense.
