Why havent you included Israel in that list. They receive over 3 billion us dollars every year from the US.
  • William
The Congo on the map is the wrong Congo. The Democratic Republic of Congo is the country nextdoor, to the right.
  • alison
can you let us know where this data came from and what the date are... who compiled it and what period does it cover?
  • Chris Dotson
What in the world do you folks mean, "only per capita counts"? Fine, I'll found a country with just me and give $300 per year. Now I'm at the top of the list, and I'm clearly doing the most to help in the world.

There are lies, damned lies, and statistics, but sometimes the actual amount of money matters, folks.

    Braden,

You said the graph was wrong because the UK contributes 13.91 million. Are you talking pounds or dollars?

The graph is in USD and given the exchange rate, it would make the UK amount seem smaller because the UK currency is worth more. It would therefore take more US currency to match the UK level.

I don't know if I explained this very well I have taken a bit of cold medicine. lol. But I think you get what I'm saying.

I am guessing this does not include personal aid.
Such as Gates or Buffett. Which would push the US donations way into the atmosphere.
  • greg
The US should donate way less money than it does.
Countries like China, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates should be the top donaters these days
  • King Credibility
It is amazing the amount of money being funneled by the U.S. and the E.U. to other countries. How much of it is lost. Who monitors the way the money is spent.

After the E.U. stopped funding a radical anti-Israel NGO, yesterday Spain stepped in and filled their shoes. http://bit.ly/1uBPYn
  • Most aid figures that get reported are as a % of GDP, so it is a measure of what portion of its wealth a country gives, not an absolute number. The US is so high here because it has a huge GDP, its % figure is very small (lower than Canada, for instance).

Also, these OECD numbers to not include military assistance, which would put Israel and Egypt right up near the top.

How much of that developmental aid goes to US engineering and infrastructure firms in the US? And where is Irael?
  • Steve
Aid per land mass in acres or it doesn't count...

The graph is what it is, and could have been better with the addition of per capita, but you are not disputing the accuracy of the graph you are disputing the accuracy of what you wish was the subject of the graph, but which in fact is not the subject of the graph.
  • Chris
So America's a at the top due to misleading use of statistics.
Iraq and Afghanistan contribute sizably to the 'receiving aid' side of things.
Misuse of data result in multiple countries with a statistically higher donor-rate than the US being completely ignored. For example Canada.

    Go figure.

How is it possible that those orange countries are so piss poor and crap, when they're getting all this aid.
They all really need a change of leadership and to get off their asses.
  • Frenan
The only fact that isn't skewed in this graph is that it was created by an American.

Per capita or it doesn't count.

Additionally, bombing the sh*t out of a country and then sending palettes of money to American contractors there to 'assist' rebuilding efforts hardly counts as aid.
  • ali
if iraq is the top receiver of us foreign aid , where does iraqi oil flow to?
  • Matt
OK, now let's talk numbers that you can actually compare. Like aid per capita, or aid as percentage of GDP?

US aid given = $73 per capita (300m pop)
UK aid given = $164 per capita (60m pop)

China aid received = $1 per capita
  • Swift
and yet we are the bad guys
  • kwequeg
What about Israel? The US sends them several BILLION dollars a year! If you showed per capita value of recipients, they would be off the charts.
  • Braden
Donor amounts are incorrect, UK sits at 13.91 million. I love how American's love to scew graphs to show how the Americans are at the top. In reality, if the graph was done as a percentage of GNI the Americans would be at the bottom and the top 5 would be Sweden(0.98), Luxembourg(0.92), Norway(0.88), Denmark(0.82) & The Netherlands(0.80). While the US sits at 0.18
  • KGB
Is this per year? Total to date?
Is it just me, or should Israel be on there below Iraq(if per year).
  • Tk
I could have swore Canada would have contributed a sizable amount. Go figure...
  • Nick
When you invade and destroy a country does it really count as "Developmental Aid"?
  • Mr. Fancypants
You're right U.N., we Americans really don't do enough for the world.
