Military spending by various countries all over the world can be measured as each country’s spending percentage of that country’s gross domestic product. A country’s GDP is a total of the value of the services provided in a country and the products that are made there. It does not include the value of items that are imported into that country, but it does include items that are made in a country and exported out of it. The GDP of a country is often considered to be a good indicator of that country’s standard of living.
In general, the Middle East has the highest amount of military spending when compared to the GDP of the countries in that region. Africa is a mixture of countries that spend little and countries that spend nearly as much as the Middle East when compared to their own GDPs. Europe and the Americas spend in the mid range with Mexico and most Central American countries spending the least of these countries when compared to its GDP. Australasia and East Asia are also in the mid-range with Japan spending little compared to its GDP.
Total military spending all over the world can be broken down into the percentage that the country or region makes up of the entire world’s military spending. The United States spends $711 billion on military spending each year, representing 48 percent of the total military spending in the world. Central and South America spend $30 billion annually on the military, making up 2 percent of the total.
In Latin America, $39 billion is spent on the military each year, representing 3 percent of the world’s total military spending. Sub-Saharan Africa spends $10 billion per year on military spending. This expenditure is 1 percent of the world’s military spending. Russia spends $70 billion per year on its military. This is 5 percent of the total military spending of the world each year.
The Middle East and North Africa spend $82 billion on military spending each year. This is 5 percent of the world’s military spending. Australasia and East Asia together spend $120 billion on military expenses. This is 8 percent of total world military spending. China spends 8 percent of the world’s total military spending with $122 billion spent each year. Europe spends a total of $289 billion on military spend annually. Europe’s military spending is 20 percent of the world’s military spending.

Divert military spending into the Mprize ( http://www.mprize.org ), Aubre de greys founded the 10 year project to reverse aging in mice, then humans. Makes more sense than spending over 3 billion per day on the war machine, and it would only cost just 2 bilion over 10 years, of course, spending a bit more could speed up the project. The added benefit would be a practical use for the upcoming nanotech/biotech instead of applying the same developing nano/bio to new warfare uses, so what’s it to be? People have been looking for a cure for aging since the begining of civilization, so why not apply it now, and if you really are a war-mongering type, just divert less than .03% of the insane war budget to actually making our cells younger, seems to make the most sense.
might as well add saudi arabia’s and egypt’s to America’s as that’s where most of our foreign aid to those countries goe.s
What is the point of this? Measuring against GDP is a moot statistic!
Critical issue is that the US spends huge amounts on people, especially post-service. Our 711 b. is not comparable to the Chinese 122 b. They of course have far lower “labor costs…”

Surprise, surprise…the US accounts for basically half the world’s military spending.
Europe isn’t a country. Projection isn’t stated, looks like a Robinson or some other pseudo-cylindrical though. The pie chart should use the same (or at least similar) colour scheme as the choropleth. The interval ranges for your colour choices in the legend are not equal. Is this on purpose? Greenland is part of Denmark and so should be coloured the same way as it, or at least coloured since it creates a really bad figure ground. Hawaii is missing.

Spending 48% of the world’s total military budget is certainly a lot, I’ll give you that. But as a percentage of GDP, the US isn’t spending too much more than most other countries. I actually expected America’s GDP percentage to be higher.
i think there should be a “no data available” class as N. Korea shows as not spending any money on arms. It is also unclear how much China spends on arms, they are not necessarily publishing accurate figures.

Lets try directing that money towards education or, even Healthcare.

US spending includes defense of Japan, Korea, Europe, Ireland, Mexico, and on and on and on. Those countries don’t have to spend on militaries they don’t need.

The US spends way more than the “official” figures on military. Most of it is disguised in other programs and through private spending. It’s more like 10-15% of GDP.
In fact much of US GDP itself comes from selling weapons that kill hundreds of thousands each year.
