Getting elected often takes a lot of personal wealth to publicize the candidate and purchase campaign advertisements and materials. This can result in wealthy politicians acquiring many important positions of power. In many countries, getting into a position of power often results in building great personal wealth. The result of both these factors is that there are politicians worldwide that have both wealth and power.

In the Unites States, there are many millionaire politicians, but few billionaires. Michael Bloomberg, mayor of New York City, is worth $11.5. The British House of Lords has always had a great deal of wealth concentrated in this arm of the government. Lord Swraj Paul, British member of the House of Lords, is worth $1.3 billion. French Senator Serge Dassault is worth $9.9 billion.

Presidents of many nations are millionaires and even billionaires. Sometimes this is from the wealth needed to obtain the position, and sometimes it is the result of taking a high percentage of the wealth in the country as personal assets. In many countries, simply doing business in that country requires payments to officials in order to keep the process moving. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is worth $9.4 billion. Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo is worth $1.3 billion. President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe is worth $3 billion.

In Russian and several other former Soviet republics, the rampant corruption of the governments has made many Russian and Ukrainian politicians wealthy. In Russian, bribery is seen as a part of the normal business and political processes. Senator Kostyantin Zhevago of Ukraine is worth $3.4 billion. Senator Rinat Akhmetov of Ukraine is worth $7.3 billion. Russian Senator Suleiman Kerimov is worth $17.5 billion. Senator Andrey Molchanov of Russia is worth $4 billion. Russian Senator Gleb Fetisov is worth $3.9 billion.

The prevalence of monarchies in the Middle East has led to Middle Eastern politicians becoming some of the richest in the world. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates, is worth $19 billion. Sultan Haji Hassanal Bokkiah, the Sultan of Brunei, was for many years the richest man in the world. He is currently worth $20 billion. King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz, king of Saudi Arabia, is worth $21 billion. Prince Alwaleed of Saudi Arabis is worth $21.5 billion. Political leader Saad Hariri of Lebanon is worth $3.3 billion. Indonesian Chief Welfare Minister Aburizal Bakri is worth $9.2 billion.

I find many (if not most) geographical representations work very well as "heat" maps, which I think would be the most appropriate here...
  • Hugo
This picture is so inaccurate that there's even an EU country missing in the map... and it's not its frontiers that are not designed, the country really isn't there... next to Spain.
  • Karl
There are a few notable omissions from this map, most glaringly the entirety of Ecuador!
  • Nik
    That was about Rothschilds
  • Nik
They don`t declarate there wealth... Have u ever seen them in forbes rates??
  • freman
These are world leaders. I don't think Rothschilds are world leaders... at least publicly.
  • To be fair, Nigeria has had a problem with getting the prince to allocate his funds properly.
  • JK
@ CA: Where are the Rothschilds?
  • Mo money, mo problems....
  • I'm wondering as well why Bloomberg is there and not the president...
  • TI
I guess you get your numbers from somewhere but they look low with regard to the Kings and Princes in the Mideast. They outright control and OWN all the oil buried on their property so I cannot figure out why they are only worth 20 Billion? Their wealth must be several hundred times that.

Where are the Bilderburgers and The Elite
  • Very good info.. and its not being picky naming Bloomberg.. New York is one of the most influential cities in the World..
  • the mayor of NYC is definitely on par with Russian Senators... NYC is one of the largest economies in the world...
  • Where is Bill Gates?
  • Samie
Why is this world map incomplete. Like Portugal next to spain is not in it. And greenland
  • rob frost
    I second @CA and @Jerel,

    "Where are the Rothschilds?"

These richest lists like Forbes are inaccurate.
There are people so many times richer than this list, that they have to hide their wealth.

    Rockefeller is another example.
  • Pedro
What kind of map is this?
Do I live in a country that does not exist?
Why isn't Portugal where it should, right next to Spain?
  • Mark
Wow! Ignore the real culprits like the bank owners. Lets see their list.
  • Aleksey
Obasanjo is not a president of Nigeria since 2007
  • This list is more politically correct than complete. Some, like the Rothschilds, are
    conspicuously absent.
  • Locke
Choosing Bloomberg makes it clear there's a bone to pick instead of objectivity. You're gonna compare world Presidents, Kings, Sultans, Senators and...and a city mayor. Sure it's NYC but still to call Bloomberg among the most powerful on a world stage just isn't accurate.

There are dozens of ways to better illustrate this message, this was lousy execution.
  • Sean
Wow, Mugabe has a lot of dough for someone who's country has one of the worst economies in the world.
  • You are MISSING the #1 Richest man on earth!
    Why?

The Richest Man on Earth is the POPE!
